Johnny Appleseed
Students hear a story about Johnny Appleseed and his move westward. They draw connections to the story and the apple industry of Michigan. Students then learn facts about Michigan apples and then taste apple products made in Michigan.

The picture to the left is a sample of student work from the assignment. Below shows the apple products the students were able to sample. (Apple butter, made locally, on graham crackers, and Michigan apple cider).

The Edmund Fitzgerald
A touching lesson that I taught on the anniversary of the freighter sinking. Students experience the story "The Edmund Fitzgerald, The Song of the Bell" and then watch a dramatic video of real footage of the freighter set to Gordon Lightfoot's song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".  After the video the students each paid trubute to the lives lost by silently ringing a bell, one time for every life lost.

Students were very touched by this lesson. They talked about it for weeks later and went home to tell their friends and family about this traggic story.

Michigan Latitude and Longitude
Students learn what the ideas of latitude and longitude are by using a globe and working together as a class and then apply them to work sheets.
